First-Time Finishing Line
Cross, cutback, first-time finish — the pattern behind most goals, drilled until the finisher's body shape is automatic.
Step 1 of 3·Whip it early — the box is already running
Set-up
Attacking third with a full goal. Server central, wide man deep, finisher and a near-post decoy in the box, one defender, goalkeeper in.
By age group
- U9-U10
- Shorten to a 30-yard move and roll the cutback along the floor.
Run it in order
- 1
Server plays a firm pass out to the wide man on the move.
- 2
Wide man whips an early cross — the box is already moving.
- 3
Cutback to the penalty spot, not the six-yard box.
- 4
Finisher arrives and strikes first time across the keeper.
- 5
Eight balls per set, then rotate the wide man and finisher.
Coaching points
Cutbacks beat keepers — the six-yard box is where shots die.
Finisher: open your body early so the strike is across, not at, the keeper.
The near-post decoy drags the defender — that's why the spot is empty.
Whip the cross early; a late cross finishes the move before it starts.
Progressions
- Add a second defender recovering — the decoy becomes live.
- Finisher may not stop the ball: first time or the rep doesn't count.
Make it easier
- Cross is a throw-in height roll to the spot.

Edge of the Box Finish

Crossing & Finishing
A winger isolated against a full-back delivers early, and two attackers attack the cross with different runs — near post and far post — the classic pattern behind most team goals.

Cutback Finishes
The highest-value pass in grassroots football: the winger reaches the byline and pulls it back for a first-time finish from the penalty spot.
