Rondo Activate

A light two-touch rondo that raises the pulse, gets thousands of touches in the first ten minutes and sharpens the scanning habits the whole session builds on.

Step 1 of 3·Two-touch maximum — move the ball before the press arrives

Set-up

Mark a 15 x 15 grid (bigger for older ages: 20 x 20). Five attackers on the outside, two defenders inside wearing bibs. One ball. Spare players rotate in as defenders.

By age group

U7-U8
Six touches and a bigger grid — the goal is confidence, not pressure.
U15-U16
One touch in the middle third of the grid and a three-second defenders' hold after each win.

Run it in order

  1. 1

Outside players keep the ball moving — two touches maximum, one ball.

  2. 2

Defenders press together; they win it by intercepting or forcing a bad touch.

  3. 3

After every pass, the passer does three dynamic moves on the spot — heel raises, side lunges or squats — then re-scans.

  4. 4

If the defenders win it, the passer who lost it swaps in. Nobody stands still for more than ten seconds.

Coaching points

  • Ball speed is the warm-up — a slow rondo warms up nobody.

  • Scan before you receive: shoulder check on every ball.

  • Body open on reception — take the first touch where you want to play next.

  • Dynamic moves are part of the drill, not a distraction — quality over speed.

Progressions

  • One-touch rondos for the last two minutes.
  • Two balls going at once for the final 90 seconds.
  • Outside players must call the name of the receiver before it arrives.

Make it easier

  • Eight-touch allowance for younger groups until the rhythm settles.
